Angeles asks me to explain the uses of “neither”, “nor”, “either” and “or”. either” and “or”. The main difficulty with this topic is that both “either” and “neither” sometimes have the same meaning.

Used together with “nor” it is a conjunction; that is, it serves to join two sentences. In this case it means: “neither” For example: “Neither cheap nor nice”. “Neither cheap nor nice.” [nider chiip nor nais].

It can be an adjective; that is, it can “qualify” a thing. In this case it means “neither/nor ” E.g. “Neither project was approved.” [nider prochet guas apruvd] Neither of the (two) projects was approved. Note: Notice how in this example “neither/ninguno” comes before the noun “project/proyecto”.

It can be a pronoun; that is, it can serve as a substitute for a noun. In this case it also means “ninguno/a” but the function it performs is different. For example: “I got two presents, but liked neither.” [aigat tupresents bat laikt nider]. I got two presents but I didn’t like either one. Past simple questions with wh and did

If you notice, the change that has occurred between the direct and the indirect question is in the order of the elements. While in the direct question we had the inversion between verb to be and subject, as we have said in the rule (Question word + to be + subjet? ), in the indirect question, there is no inversion, but we have question word + subject + verb. If you notice, we have the inversion in ‘Can you tell me…’. As we already have an inversion at the beginning of the question, we cannot make another inversion. Remember: only one inversion per sentence!
